Arts gonna art

.

.

"L'art pour l'art"   is French meaning   "art for art's sake" ~  you may be more familiar with the Latin term   "Ars gratia artis"  that has been used as the slogan by   Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer  which appears in the circle around the roaring head of the Lion in  their motion picture logo.  The modern day phrase commonly used is "Arts gonna art."

.

.

.

.

The debate of  the differing philosophies behind the phrases and opinions from prominent writers has been going on at least since the 1800's.  You can click   HERE    to read an article about it on Wikipedia.

Basically,  writers have debated  the merits of poetry for poetry's sake
{ "The Poetic Principle" is an essay by Edgar Allan Poe as a literary criticism, in which Poe presents his literary theory that a poem should be written "for a poem's sake" and that the ultimate goal of art is aesthetic only, meaning the creation and appreciation of beauty. }
.
.
or if the value of art has to serve some moral or didactic purpose
{ Didacticism is a philosophy that emphasizes instructional and informative qualities in literature and other types of art. The term in its Greek origin signified learning in a fascinating and intriguing manner thus Didactic art was meant both to entertain and to instruct. }

.
.
or,   indeed,   the opposite that there is a responsibility to be morally subversive.
.
.
Perhaps all viewpoints are valid.

An example of Poe's "poetry for art's sake"  ~
.
Annabel  Lee
by Edgar Allan Poe
.
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

An example of  "didactic poetry" { with a lesson in morality } might, at its simplest be ~
.
do unto others,  it's true!
as you'd have them do unto you
.
for if you cause them pain
for your own selfish gain
.
karma may come around
and on  your soul rebound
.

Today's prompt is if  poetry  ~  and all arts  ~  should be done only for arts sake..
  • Write a poem for arts' sake,  with no significance beyond the words on the page
  • Write a didactic poem that is a conveying a moral purpose { ie: the golden rule }
  • Write a morally subversive poem { ie: advocating rebellion }
  • Re-write someone else's poem in the opposite style { ie: moral vs subversive }
  • Write about a poet or writer who is known for her/his works which were consistently of  one of these viewpoints.
  • Write advocating one viewpoint or another,  with your rationale.

  7. Not sure I have interpreted it correctly, but I enjoyed doing it [wrong :-)].
    Maybe over the next few days I might manage to reform this in one of the other styles.
    Thanks.

  9. I couldn't resist this prompt, Dani. Though my philosophy is only half-baked, I like the taste of pie-crust dough with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
