Under the Big Top

For generations, the circus has represented fun at its finest, a chance to escape our everyday reality and view the world with childlike amazement.  From the family-friendly antics of Ringling Bros. to the almost-mystical wonder of the Cirque du Soleil, eager spectators can find something to tickle almost any fancy.

The sound of the calliope, the smell of popcorn and cotton candy, the sideshow acts…it’s easy to slip into sensory overload, and that’s before we even step inside the tent to see the show.

Clowns, jugglers, acrobats, lion tamers and trapeze artists perform astounding feats in those three fabled rings all for the approval of the crowd.

The word “circus” can also have other meanings as well.  Certainly the last few weeks here in the States would qualify as a political circus, and a high-profile trial may become a media circus.  “Circus” can also refer to a location.  Some notable examples of this include the Circus Maximus in Rome, Piccadilly Circus in London, or Circus Circus in Las Vegas.

So put on your poetic ringmaster hat, and write a poem about the circus. Share the results with the rest of us by signing up with Mr. Linky.  Please remember to mention Poetry Jam in your post.  Oh, and be sure to visit the others who share their work, every show deserves an audience after all.

  3. Welcome, everyone! My little expedition to the circus ended up as a sidetrip to the sideshow...yep, I found a way to go dark at the circus, completely figures! Really looking forward to seeing how everyone else interprets this prompt!

  4. Ha ha! I had a bit of fun with the circus theme. Sometimes a person just has to laugh.

  6. Good prompt Mary. Many ways to go with this. I actually went with a real circus--which I find I do really enjoy! Fun to see what others have done with this too. Write on friends!
